How to Buy Jewelry and Accessories

How to Buy Jewelry and Accessories

There are high variances in jewelry when it comes to quality, look, price and material. With such a wide selection to choose from, it can be difficult to find the right jewelry for you or a loved one. In order to be happy when you buy jewelry, youll need to consider not only the personality of the person youre buying it for, but the quality of the piece as well. Fortunately, you can buy appropriate jewelry with a bit of planning. Match Your Skin

Consider your skin tone when choosing between gold and silver colored jewelry. Check the underside of your forearm. When you have a blue or pink tint to your skin, you have a cool skin tone. Pick silver or platinum jewelry. If your skin is tinted yellow or gold, you have a warm skin tone. In this case, pick gold jewelry.

Look for high quality gold jewelry. For the highest quality, pick 24 karat gold. A karat level of anything less than 24 will have a smaller amount of the gold in the piece. Choose 10k or 14k gold jewelry to save money while still acquiring a high quality item.

Jewelry That Lasts a Lifetime

Consider the life of the jewelry when choosing platinum or silver metals. While silver costs less money, it doesnt last as long as platinum. For jewelry pieces that will be worn on a daily basis over many years, such as a wedding ring, platinum is a better choice because it will retain quality over the years. When picking either silver or platinum, choose jewelry with a high quality marking. The best quality marking for both metals is 1000. Stick with metals of 800 or higher to ensure quality.

Dont Forget Personality

Choose jewelry that matches your personality. While gold necklaces with large gemstones may work well for some, avoid these if you cant see yourself wearing them on a regular basis. Consider necklace length as you may not be fond of choker necklaces or jewelry that hangs too low. Remember your personality and you should be able to buy jewelry that you will wear often.

Jewelry for Others

Put a lot of thought into the purchase when youre buying jewelry for someone else. Consider the kind of jewelry they normally wear. If you never see them wearing bracelets, you may want to avoid this jewelry type as they could dislike it. Choose gold if youve seen them wear it on other occasions, or avoid that metal type if they wear silver jewelry instead. Simple, elegant jewelry has a high chance for success than pieces with a lot of gems or thick chains. She won first place in 2005 with The Walk and third place in 2006 with Misconceptions.

How do You Know if Fake or Real Diamonds are in Your Jewelry

How do You Know if Fake or Real Diamonds are in Your Jewelry

Diamonds Timeless Possessions A diamond is a timeless possession. The years of natural nurture and aging are evident in its pristine beauty and sparkle. Given the rarity of diamonds and the increasingly difficult means of gaining possession of them, its no wonder why they are so highly sought after and why their purchase is always such a lucrative investment. However, given their increasing demand, its likely that the odd conman will try to cash in on the spendthrift nature or desires of credulous consumers.

How do you know fake or real diamond is in the expensive watch, bracelet or earring that youre about to purchase? Below, we will list a few tests that can be done to verify the authenticity of the diamond. It may be practically difficult and realistically embarrassing to perform certain of these tests, but its best to be one hundred percent certain before you exchange all your hard earned money.

Various Tests That Can Be ConductedTest 1: Request for a grading certificate. PGGL, LGP, GIA or AGSL. Usually, the dealer of the diamond should also be affiliated with a professional organization and have official certification to verify this. It is crucial that you always request to see this certification when purchasing diamonds especially via the internet.

Test 2: Test their refractive nature. they bend the light that passes through them. If you shine a light such as the red beam light found in toys that have become common amidst the younger generation through the diamond, it should bend the light quite significantly from its initial trajectory. Be cautious for double refraction however. If, when shining your light and viewing the diamond from the top, you notice something that looks almost like double vision, your diamond could be fake. A cleverly designed compound of silicon carbide may fool even the most experienced of jewelers.

Test 3: Look at your diamond carefully. If the diamond is mounted on a ring, bracelet, earring, etc., and you look at it from the top; you should not be able to see the bottom. If the diamond is not mounted, place it on its side on top of a paper with writing on. If you can view the writing through the diamond you are allowed to be a bit skeptical. However, if the diamond is disproportionately cut, this test may prove fruitless. You may very well be able to view the writing through an authentic, disproportionately cut diamond.

Test 4: Look out for tell tale signs. Its common that genuine diamonds are mounted on fairly authentic jewelry. Its not often you find a really expensive diamond mounted on cheap gold or platinum. Look for stamps within the mounting such as 10K, 18K, 750, 900, 950 etc. Cubic Zirconium, is a total giveaway.

Look at the color of the diamond. Authentic diamonds have a slight yellowish tint to them. If the diamond is completely clear, chances are it fake. The yellowish tint on the diamond makes gold mounting complimentary to the diamonds inherent color and more attractive.

Test 5: Breathe on the diamond. Although this may not be viewed too favorably from the sellers point of view, youd rather be safe than sorry. Diamonds are exceptionally good conductors of heat. If, after 4 seconds after you breathe on the diamond, the diamond remains misted, its probably fake. With this being said, there are certain capped cupid zirconiums that will past this test. For the more veteran or cautious diamond purchaser, the purchase of a diamond/ moissanite tester would probably be quite a lucrative investment.

Test 6: Cost. The price of the diamond is largely quite a good indicator as to whether the diamond is fake or not. If a particularly large diamond is comparatively cheaper than what you may have conventionally expected, you should be a bit skeptical.

Test 7: Saliva. Although this may not be the most practical of tests, it has proven true from a number of diamond merchants. If you gather a bit of saliva on your forefinger and trail your finger around the surface of the diamond, your saliva should closely follow the trail you create with your finger. Saliva generally dissipates on other clear surfaces such as glass.

Diamonds Definite Value for MoneyA diamond is the world most valuable stone. Magnets are marketed to treat a variety of different ailments such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. Though magnetic jewelry for healing comes in many forms such as bracelets, necklaces and earrings, rings are one of the most popular.

Step 2

Wear your magnetic ring daily always on the hand that is closest to your pain. According to NCAM, one theory for how magnetic rings can help to heal the body is that since the blood contains iron, it may act as a conductor for magnetic energy, so a magnetic ring would increase the blood flow, bringing healing oxygen and vital nutrients. Therefore, you should wear your ring on the side of the body with the most pain and the most need for healing so that the blood flow will be increased to that area.

Step 3

Be patient yet persistent in wearing your magnetic ring. One study published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation tested the use of magnetic therapy in treating people with pain from neuropathy. This study found that participants had statistically significant reductions in the amount of burning, numbness, tingling and pain after three to four months of using magnets. NCAM states that pregnant women should not wear magnetic rings because the potential for harm to the fetus is unknown. People who need to use medical devices like pacemakers, insulin pumps or defibrillators also should not wear magnetic rings because the magnets may alter the settings of these machines. People who use very sensitive medications or use medications on their skin should be careful about using magnetic rings, as they could cause redness of the skin or a rash.

Healing with Magnetic Rings

Healing with Magnetic Rings

Magnetic rings are a type of jewelry sold for the purpose of healing and relieving pain rather than for the purpose of fashion. Magnets are marketed to treat a variety of different ailments such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. Goddards Silver Jewelry Polishing Cloth

Goddards Silver Jewelry Polishing Cloth

In my jewelry making business, I find that my sterling silver ear wires will tarnish if I dont keep them tightly closed up in plastic bags. When I change out earrings at the three stores that sell them for me, I regularly have to remove tarnished sterling silver earrings that have not sold, bring them home, and remove the tarnish. Since these ear wires and findings are small and delicate, there is no way your typical paste metal cleaners would work, so several years ago I started buying a cleaning cloth for my silver. Some are better than others.

Last week I was shopping at Bed Bath Beyond, and noticed they carry one of these styles of cleaning cloths, its called Goddards Long Shine Silver Jewelry Polishing Cloth. It claims to beautify and protect the finest silver, silver plate and gold. The picture on the box shows several objects that have been cleaned with this cloth; a candlestick, flatware, and jewelry.

As stated, this cloth comes in a silver colored box, and the cloth itself is a aqua color, and measures 17 1/2 inches by 13 inches. The edges are cut with a pinking shears, because the material does look like it might ravel. Its a very soft cloth, resembling a feel like cotton flannel, and it has a very slight scent to it, but only noticeable if you actually smell it up close.

The cloth is 100% English cotton, and is said to be of high quality. In order for it to remove tarnish, it is impregnated with Goddards exclusive cleaning, polishing and anti tarnish agents. It claims to polish to a brilliant shine, and also states that you can use this cloth for dusting as well as polishing.

How To Use

Directions are simple, wipe the surface to be cleaned with the cloth, then buff with Goddards Long Shine Cloth to give the product its shine. Goddards does remove tarnish, but in comparing this to my other cloth, the fibers in the Goddards dont seem to be woven as tightly, and the top soft material on the cloth actually has come off and onto my jewelry. Looking at the cloth now, I can pick off small pills of blue, as if the cloth were shedding. That has never happened with the other brand of silver cloths I own.

From my experience, I would recommend Goddards Silver Jewelry Polishing Cloth for people who want to clean bigger items like candlesticks, silver bowls, or other large pieces of silver. It just has not worked as effectively on my small pieces of jewelry and ear wires.

The size is very generous, so this would work well in cleaning any silver serving pieces or candlesticks, and it did shine up some gold candlesticks I own, so I can recommend it for that purpose. However, I purchased it solely for cleaning jewelry. On the bright side, it did clean up my silver necklace chains quite nicely, but again, I experienced the material started to shed a bit, like flannel would when it meets any kind of friction. Now, the box does say to wipe gently, so maybe I was applying too much pressure.

As it stands right now, I am planning on returning this to Bed Bath Beyond to get a refund of my purchase price of $8.99, which was a little more than I usually spend for this kind of product.

Demi Lovato Copies Justin Bieber with Fun

Demi Lovato Copies Justin Bieber with Fun

Demi Lovato hit up Justin Biebers Canadian home turf last Friday, where his girlfriend Selena Gomez also happens to be spending some time for the British Columbia leg of her We Own The Night tour. While there, Lovato even sported a fun ensemble much like one that Bieber has himself worn. Pure coincidence, or has the Skyscraper singer taken a few fashion lessons from the Biebs?

Lovato has done the 70s hippie thing, 80s grunge, and also modern day glam during a string of recent public appearances. On Friday, it was all about the 90s, though, as photographs showed the style chameleon wearing a skirt with black tights, booties, and large earrings. But the most significant part of Demi Lovatos outfit was her funky T shirt bearing LL Cool Js picture from his I Need Love era, topped off by a white, three quarter sleeve jacket.

Sound familiar? Justin Bieber rocked a very similar look minus the skirt and tights! at the 2011 MuchMusic Awards this past summer. His Saved By The Bell shirt, boasting the photo of an adorable Tiffani Thiessen, ahem Kelly Kapowski, garnered plenty of buzz. He even paired it with a blazer!

Who pulled it off most fashionably. Demi Lovato or Justin Bieber? Bieber did look pretty cute and cool, while Lovatos interpretation was a bit overdone with too much jewelry. Plus, she shouldnt have tucked her shirt in to the skirt, thereby cutting off the bottom half of LL Cool J.

The Biebs may have won best dressed, but hes not the first to start the trend of celebrities wearing other celebrities, as Celebuzz points out. Other pop stars the likes of Britney Spears and Katy Perry have shown Madonna their love with Madge printed tees. Of course, Thiessen also piled on the Bieber Fever, repaying the 17 year old entertainers unspoken compliment by wearing a shirt plastered with his face at her Horrible Bosses premire. Oh, and she wore a blazer with it, too.

Birthday Cake Ideas for a Pre

Birthday Cake Ideas for a Pre

If your child loves everything to do with fashion, surprise her with a cake that helps show off her divaliscious side. Make a handbag cake from two sheet cakes. Hold the cakes together with royal icing, made from egg whites, confectioners sugar and vanilla extract and use a knife to sculpt the cakes into a handbag. Cover the handbag in a smooth fondant layer and use licorice to create the handle. Once complete, embellish the bag with edible gemstones and other tasty toppings. You can also surround the cake with fashion goodies, like fondant lipstick and candy necklaces and rings. You can make him a replica of his digital music player from a single sheet cake, covered with a perfectly smooth layer of fondant in a color that matches his own electronic device. To finish the cake in a hurry, use icing pens to draw buttons and symbols on the cake. If you have a little time to spare, invest some of your creativity into the cake and make each tiny button from small pieces of fondant. If your preteen is more into his phone or video games than music, you can create a cellphone or gaming console from sheet cakes as well.Sports Enthusiast CakeWhether your child is the captain of the middle school softball team, a weekend soccer enthusiast or a fan of golf, you can make her a birthday cake that celebrates her love for the sport. Use a special sphere shaped cake mold to make a soccer ball or basketball cake, and then use a textured fondant roller on a sheet of fondant to create a realistic texture for the ball. If your kiddo cant decide which sport she loves the most, make several small ball shaped cakes instead and arrange them all on one tray. Other sport themed birthday cake ideas include a jersey shaped cake to replicate her favorite teams jersey, or if youre really ambitious, a cake sculpted into a soccer stadium, with green grass icing, fondant goals and fondant or plastic figurine players.Music Lover CakeTransform an ordinary sheet cake into an extraordinary guitar with a simple cardboard cutout. Trace the shape of a guitar onto the cardboard, cut out the shape and place the shape on your sheet cake. Cut the cake, following the outline of the guitar and then cover it with buttercream frosting or fondant. Use string licorice for guitar strings and gum paste for additional details. If your child prefers to sing rather than strum the guitar, make him a cake in the shape of a microphone, or make a miniature microphone for each child from an ice cream cone and a cupcake covered with frosting. To make a drum cake, stack the cake three layers high, sculpt to form a drum shape and cover it with a smooth sheet of fondant. Add the outer rims of the drum by using strips of fondant and then make the drumsticks from two rolled pieces of leftover fondant.

The procedure should not be done during allergy season if prone to allergies and sinus infections. Smoke in the area will add to infection risk. Smokers have a higher risk of delayed recovery or more frequent sinus infections. Nickel or silver may cause an allergic reaction compounding healing difficulties. The same gun that pierces ears should not pierce noses. The stud from the piercing gun is considered by some to be too blunt and smashes through delicate cartilage. Anandi of Anandis Laboratory Offers One of a Kind Jewelry Creations

Anandi of Anandis Laboratory Offers One of a Kind Jewelry Creations

Jewelry is such a common accessory that it never hurts to have just a little bit more. For Etsy seller Anandi, of the shop Anandis Laboratory, jewelry making is a recent interest. This recent start, combined with technical knowledge and experimental ideas, have all combined beautifully to create one of a kind jewelry creations. Anandis background is relatively far from traditional crafting backgrounds she studied Molecular Biology and has worked in the field of computers and software project management prior to beginning her jewelry making. This highly scientific background is likely part of the reason why learning about the details of jewelry making appealed so strongly to Anandi she has taken multiple classes on jewelry making techniques, and reads up on other techniques in her spare time. She has only been creating jewelry pieces for about 6 months, and has been selling on Etsy for less than a month. In spite of this, or perhaps because of it, all of Anandis designs are fresh and unique just the sort of thing that a jewelry lover would look for in a new piece to add to their collection.

Anandis jewelry creations combine sterling silver with a wide variety of beads in different shapes, sizes, and colors. In fact, one of the most appealing thing about Anandis jewelry is her use of color. She combines bright flashes of color with more sedate surroundings, giving the wearer a piece that can be worn with many different outfits and for many different occasions. The majority of her jewelry pieces could move seamlessly from the board room to the bar, or from a cocktail party to a club. Some of Anandis favorite pieces actually began their life as a piece of storebought jewelry like a coral necklace that her mother purchased more than 30 years ago, but recently gave to Anandi to make something new with. For sentimental reasons, she opted to keep the resulting piece, but found the process of creating something new from something old enjoyable.

In addition to the items already available at Anandis Laboratory, Anandi also enjoys making custom pieces of jewelry. She recently completed two sets of mother daughter necklaces for a family friend. She says that she enjoys the more mathematical and scientific goals behind custom pieces after being given constraints and variables to work with, she can then apply creative solutions to the problem. Regardless of what the problem may be, Anandi is sure to come up with a beautiful jewelry solution!

Published by Dawn A. A conversation with D jewelry designer Summer Powell Photos

A conversation with 3D jewelry designer Summer Powell Photos

Be sure and check out the slideshow for more examples of Summer Powells 3D Jewelry designs.

What challenges do you face when designing 3D printed jewelry?

One of the biggest challenges is the 2 3 weeks time lag between sending a design to the 3d printer, and receiving the printed piece in the mail. Even though you can see a picture of the piece on the screen, it can be hard to tell what the solid, three dimensional piece will look like in person. And a piece that needs several rounds of refinement may take months to complete, what with the lag time. That said, there are also a lot of serendipitous things that happen in this process, like discovering that a certain group of lines creates a lovely moire pattern when you see the piece in person.

On your website, it says you are a lover of dichotomies; can you talk about how your pieces illustrate your interest in this theory?

Some of my pieces, such as the Faceted Ovals Necklace reference glamorous, baroque jewelry. Yet they are also minimal an ethereal three dimensional drawings that describe the space held by sumptuous gems. They evoke sparkly bright gems, yet theyre matte, and the lines often create a very op art feeling. Other pieces, such as the Andromeda Necklace, feel both natural and artificial, like ice formations or the 1980s Asteroids video game.

How much time do you spend on research before you actually begin creating a piece?

It really varies. Sometimes I run with an instinct, like with the Mod Moire PearlEarrings, and just start sketching CAD immediately. Other times, I gather images and ideas for a few hours. Currently creating animal inspired pieces that require research into the three dimensional shape of the animal to capture their essence.

How long does it take you from start to finish to create a piece? Lets say a pair of Andromeda earrings?

Some pieces such as the Rock Star Diamond Earrings are essentially finished when I receive the first prototype from the 3d printer. Others, such as the Andromeda Earrings or Necklace, can take months. I sketched the Andromeda Necklace in two dimensions, then created it in three dimensions in CAD, on the computer. From there, I did about five iterations of 3d printing prototypes, and refining the necklace before I was satisfied with the result. After that, I created the Andromeda Earrings from some of the elements of the necklace, and they were finished in three iterations.

Which are your best selling pieces and why do you think that these designs are most popular?

The Andromeda Necklace is a big hit this season. Its a very unique statement necklace that exemplifies the geometric and pattern trends. People love the Future Victorian Emerald Earrings and Necklace because theyre so flattering and delicate looking on everyone. Plus, the tromp loeil effect is very distinct.

What is your favorite piece on your website right now?

Definitely the Andromeda Necklace. I love the attention I get when wearing it.

Who are three artists or architects who inspire you?

I love the irreverence and fun of the Campana brothers furniture, the op patterns of Victor Vasarely, and the fusion of modern and tribal themes in Mara Hoffmans clothing.

Your bio also states an interest in mythologies and ancient symbols how have these interests manifested in your designs?

Sacred geometry fascinates me. I love the idea that a simple geometric shape or symbol can carry meaning and power, and that adornments can also function as talismans. In Greek temples the columns define the space, and the difference between inside and out, yet air can flow freely through the framework. I feel that my designs define space in a similar way. Currently Im creating a collection inspired by ancient Egyptian and Greek references, combined with more abstract geometries.

Where is your current inspiration coming from?

It comes from so many places cell structures, DNA, Dianas diadem, Super Mario Brothers, animals, spirographs, Amazonian ecosystems and constellations, to name a few.

What does being brave mean to you?

It means doing what makes you happy, and trusting that everything will fall into place beautifully from there.

Im creating new collections based on animals, digital moires, and Egyptian space stations. Im 3d scanning and remixing reality in jewelry, sculptures and housewares. Im exploring collaborations with other innovative makers.
